Yet, my quest did not end there; my fingers continued their exploration, revealing a treasure hidden within the depths of my bag. Emerging from the shadows, a diminutive book graced my palm, its cover adorned with a mesmerising animated illustration. As my gaze traced its intricate lines, the title “Le Petit Prince” by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry emerged. A smile tugged at the corners of my lips as I beheld the worn exterior and well-loved pages of this literary gem. I marveled at the profound significance harboured within the slender volume. For within its confines lay a universe of wisdom, a microcosm of life’s journey.

I arrived early to French class, greeted by the sight of a few scattered classmates milling about. As I settled into my seat, the familiar faces of my friends Tina Pope and Gary Burrows appeared, taking their places beside me. We engaged in playful banter and laughter, as we exchanged updates on our lives, a ritual as comforting as it was joyous. Soon, the classroom buzzed with activity as more students filtered in, filling the space with lively chatter. Our teacher, the esteemed Rory MacDonald, entered the room with an air of authority tempered by warmth. Despite the distinct absence of “Frenchness” in his surname, MacDonald embodied the spirit of language education with unparalleled zeal.

A native of Scotland, MacDonald’s passion for French ignited a flame within us all, inspiring us to delve into the depths of linguistic exploration. It was under his tutelage that the timeless tale of “Le Petit Prince” first graced our eager minds, weaving its enchanting narrative into our shared experiences. The book, a global phenomenon, captures the essence of innocence, wisdom and human connections. It reveals layers of profound insight into the human condition. Within the confines of its pages, readers embark on a journey alongside the Little Prince, traversing to distant planets and encountering a myriad of peculiar characters. Yet, beneath the whimsical veneer lies a poignant exploration of existential themes. Saint-Exupéry delicately threads together meditations on love, loneliness, and the quest for meaning. At its core, “Le Petit Prince” beckons us to reflect on the fleeting nature of existence and the importance of cultivating connections that transcend superficiality. The book’s enduring appeal lies in its ability to evoke a sense of childlike wonder while imparting timeless truths about the human spirit. This remarkable insight unfolds as he travels through space.

The cosmos, with its boundless expanse, has forever ignited humanity’s imagination, beckoning us to explore its mysteries. It’s been heralded as “The Final Frontier,” a domain where visionaries like Jeff Bezos (Blue Origin) and Elon Musk (Space X) lead the charge, fuelled by a thirst for discovery. Yet, as our planet teeters on the threshold of overpopulation, straining its fragile ecosystems to the brink, space emerges as a tantalising solution—an uncharted frontier ripe for exploration. But amidst the excitement of interstellar ventures, a pressing question looms: Who holds sway over the celestial realms? Are we truly free to roam and conquer as we please, or are there unseen forces that govern the galaxies, guiding our trajectory through the cosmos?

Currently, only a few international agreements define acceptable behaviour in space, but they lack enforcement mechanisms. The foundation of space diplomacy dates back to the 1967 Outer Space Treaty, which prohibits territorial claims, nuclear weapons placement, and holds states responsible for non-governmental space activities.

In 2020, NASA introduced the Artemis Accords to guide lunar exploration, emphasising peace, mutual aid, data sharing, environmental preservation, and sustainable resource extraction, with 36 nations signing, excluding Russia and China. For commercial entities, the Hague Institute for Global Justice initiated The Washington Compact in 2022, echoing principles of the Outer Space Treaty. Signed by space startups, civil-society groups, consultants, and former NASA officials, it lacks endorsement from SpaceX and Blue Origin. Despite the absence of enforcement, shared norms can influence behaviour; companies on the moon have a vested interest in cooperation for mutual benefit and project success, deterring disruptive actions that could harm business ventures.

As humanity marches relentlessly forward on our fragile Blue Planet, pushing it perilously close to its limits, we cast our eyes skyward, seeking salvation in the vast expanse of the cosmos. Perhaps in our forthcoming Space Treaty, we should consider mandating the reading of “Le Petit Prince,” aspiring to infuse the essence of humanity into our celestial endeavours.
