Masisi pays heartfelt tribute to Geingob

Amongst the first world leaders to offer condolences, Masisi's visit to Namibia exemplified the strength of their friendship.
The Botswana government donated 45 vehicles for the funeral arrangements, showcasing Masisi's commitment to honouring Geingob's memory. "Following the announcement of the passing on of Geingob, I directed that flags fly at half-mast throughout Botswana until Geingob is laid to rest," Masisi declared during a public statement to Parliament.
Despite typically refraining from briefing Parliament on his travels, Masisi broke his silence to address the significance of his journey to Namibia, underscoring the exceptional nature of Geingob's legacy. Reflecting on their shared values of democracy and human rights, he described Geingob as an extraordinary statesman during a moment of silence observed by legislators. "In his words, Geingob was an extraordinary man and an extraordinary leader," Masisi solemnly reminisced during his address to Parliament. "His life was a journey of servitude which took him, in quest of liberation for his country and his people, to Francistown in Botswana." In his tribute to Geingob, Masisi highlighted the late president's pivotal role in the liberation struggle and his connection to Botswana, where he once resided.
Their close relationship, fostered by shared experiences and mutual respect, facilitated meaningful diplomatic ties between their nations. "I looked up to him both as an elder Statesman and brother," Masisi reflected. "Our warm relationship made it easy for our Vice Presidents, Ministers and senior officials to deepen our bilateral ties." Acknowledging Geingob's global impact as a champion of democracy and peace, Masisi affirmed his commitment to preserving the late leader's legacy. He led his government in paying respects at the Namibian High Commission, honouring Geingob's enduring influence on both countries. Attending the memorial and state funeral services in Namibia, Masisi reaffirmed the strong bilateral relationship between Botswana and Namibia. Through livestreaming arrangements, he ensured that citizens from both nations could participate in commemorating Geingob's life and contributions.
"As I said elsewhere, Dr. Geingob was a true friend of Botswana," Masisi solemnly declared. "We shared a common vision and an unwavering determination to achieve higher levels of development for our countries and people." Expressing his grief and admiration for Geingob's humility and dedication to his people, Masisi emphasised their shared vision for regional development. Despite Geingob's illness postponing a scheduled bilateral meeting, Masisi remained steadfast in his commitment to advancing their common goals. "In his words, 'because I am unwell young man, but we will meet later after my recovery,'" Masisi quoted Geingob. Looking to the future, Masisi expressed confidence in building upon Geingob's foundation to strengthen the bonds between Botswana and Namibia. He said their shared history of solidarity and cooperation serves as a testament to their enduring friendship and commitment to shared prosperity.
