The Monitor has learnt the BDP executive committee convened yesterday (Sunday) to finalise crucial decisions regarding the conduct and budgeting of the primary elections. The BDP primaries are scheduled for March, with an official announcement anticipated this week.

During this week, individuals aspiring to contest the primaries will learn if they have successfully passed the vetting process at the branch level, according to a reliable source. Notably, the BDP constitution grants powers to the party central committee to vet out potential candidates before branch committees make their recommendations.

The Political Education and Elections Committee (PEEC), led by Chairperson Alec Seametso and Secretary Fankie Motsaathebe, is gearing up to ensure the activation of all party structures, particularly branch and regional committees, shared the source. The PEEC team "now increased from 20 to 30 members, will collaborate with the Electoral Board and an independent body" for the primary elections.

The Monitor also learnt that, over the weekend in Maun, the party leadership stressed the importance of a compromise candidate and urged candidates to assure party members of their cooperation in case of defeat at the primaries. Furthermore, the BDP leadership visited all three Maun constituencies over the weekend in response to reports of a smear campaign amongst members vying for general election.

Members were briefed on the significance of understanding the party constitution and adhering to the code of conduct for those intending to contest the primaries. “It is true the PEEC is complete and the communication committee is not yet complete. I would know if the inner executive is sitting or not as I only attend Central Committee,” BDP spokesperson, Kagelelo Kentse confirmed.
