Residents of Tawana ward were left speechless when the news of the man's arrest by the police started spreading around the village on Thursday, amid talk that the alleged rape could have been going on for quite a while until the girl's mother became suspicious and alerted the police.

Confirming the investigation, Superintendent Michael Maphephu said the girl's mother reported seeing used condoms in the little girl's bedroom, raising suspicion that something amiss might have been going on. "The mother said she was cleaning the girl's room when she made the unsightly discovery. She said her curiosity led her to turn the room upside down only to discover more used condoms hidden away pointing to the possibility that she could be in for a rude awakening," said Maphephu, adding that it was then that the mother came to report her findings to the police.

He said the mother also disclosed that before coming to report, she had questioned her daughter who had revealed that the abuse at the hands of her father had been ongoing for quite some time. Maphephu said the sexual violation was confirmed by medical tests conducted by doctors at Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital.

It was then that the 48-year-old girl's father was arrested for questioning. The suspect remained in police custody at the time of writing yesterday. Superintendent Maphephu disclosed that reported cases of sexual abuse on minors were rising in the district, with four such cases recorded in the new year.
