In a press statement, WUC Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Gaselemogwe Senai revealed that the project entails the design and construction of a 16 million litres a day water treatment plant complete with all accessories.

Senai added that the project is intended to supply water to Kasane, Kazungula, Lesoma, Mabele, Kavimba, Kachikau, Parakarungu and Satau villages.

He also said the new Plant is designed to meet current and future water demands for greater Kasane for 20-years. “The old Kasane Water Treatment Plant was relocated with other non-tourism and Government facilities from the Chobe River to make way for the Kasane Redevelopment Plan. The Project which was awarded on July 10, 2020 to Zhong Gan Engineering & Construction Corporation (Pty) Ltd/Magara Building Construction (Pty) Ltd Joint Venture at the amount of BWP 303,869,371.08, underwent testing and commissioning December 2023 and the commissioning process is currently progressing well in line with the set Project Specifications,” Senai disclosed.

Senai pointed out that on January 13 2024 water reached Plateau Storage Tanks through the newly constructed 500mm pipeline. He indicated that this week water started reaching the Flowertown and Ngoma Storage Tanks through the newly constructed 400mm pipeline and Nnyungwe Pump Station. Senai also said the full supply to all beneficiary areas planned under this Project is expected at the end of January 2024.

“We advise residents of Kasane and surrounding villages to exercise caution and keep taps always closed as water may reach their houses and properties at any time. We thank the Government of Botswana, Kasane Leadership and Residents for their support. We also thank the WUC teams and the contractors for the successful implementation of the Project and other projects countrywide as we keep it flowing, for you,” Senai highlighted.

Last year WUC announced that it is 90% through to their establishment as a centre of excellence. WUC also indicated that that by 2023, the corporation should be a regional centre of excellence in terms of water delivery.
