The Federation will also host the 2024 Africa Games qualifiers where countries will compete for two slots to represent Zone Six during the continental competition scheduled for Accra, Ghana in March.

The qualifiers are slated for January 27 and 28 with matches taking place at the Marabou Rocks in Broadhurst, Gaborone. The BVF president, Tsoseletso Magang told MmegiSport that the budget for the tournaments stands at P100, 000 and so far they have spent within the limit.

“We are still pursuing a few sponsors who are promising support in kind. It would help us to get things like internet connection and hydration,” she said. Botswana will field a men’s team of George Chiswaniso and Sekao Jack for the Africa Games qualifiers. Magang said Jack and Chiswaniso are the best pick because the Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC) has made provision for the two based on their performance in the last two years. Jack and Chiswaniso are also attempting to qualify for Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

The duo finished third in the previous tournament that was held in Mozambique in November. They are ranked number two in Africa and 143 in the world after accumulating 912 points from five outings. The team, which is under the tutelage of Kabelo Marumo, has resumed training after the festive break.

Speaking to MmegiSport, Jack said they started training this week but the weather conditions were unfavourable due to the rains. He said they ended up focusing on the physical aspect and neglecting the ball work. “We finished 2023 strongly considering that we only have one more Olympic qualifying stage, being the continental stage which is going to take place in June,” Jack said. Countries that have confirmed participation are Angola, Botswana, South Africa, Mozambique, Lesotho, Namibia and Zimbabwe.
