Comedians promise rib-cracking season

After an eventful 2023, the Gaborone Comedy Club said they are looking to continue where they left off with a series of comedy events lined up.
In an interview with local comedian and co-founder of Gaborone Comedy Club, Johny Pula, he said their upcoming show which features international comedians, Masapo from Lesotho and Tye Lamar from the USA will be a colourful and hilarious occasion not to be missed.
To ensure that the show lives up to the hype, they have also put together a number of highly respected local comedians such as Bambino, Dexter Royale, Triccs, Makopoza, Stellar Atsile, Phetso wa Metlae and Tumelo Depay. The show will also feature another comedy sensation, Boldwin Bals as the host. Johny Pula also said they are looking ahead to expanding on the successes of last year, adding that they will be looking to host the second show in February. “We are dedicated to making our shows even more dynamic and engaging.
The first show of the year, themed, ‘It’s January, Don’t Worry', kicks off on January 23, followed by ‘Too Young To Be This Old’ on February 2. Expect more themed shows throughout the year, scheduled on either Tuesdays or Fridays, as we strive to bring laughter to our audience and make each show a memorable experience,” he said.
Furthermore, Johny Pula said last year was marked by both highs and lows. “A standout highlight was the ‘Dikgosi Tsa Comedy Show’ on Independence Day, which proved so successful that it’s now set to become an annual event. Since the inception of Gaborone Comedy Club’s mission to revitalize stand-up comedy, there has been a noticeable and significant positive change in the comedy scene,” he added.
Johny Pula stated that the club has successfully brought fresh energy, diverse talents and increased enthusiasm among both performers and the audience, contributing to the overall growth and vibrancy of stand-up comedy in the country. He noted that some of the achievements include hosting close to 10 international acts, consistently filling up Cresta President Hotel and reaching full capacity at Maitisong Theatre for Boldwin Bals’ Comedy Special, ‘The Bals & The Bloody Fools’. “These milestones underscore the growing popularity and success of the club.
Additionally, the support from the National Arts Council, sponsoring a South African Comedy Club tour featuring Triccs & Jonny Pula, further highlights the significant impact and recognition the Gaborone Comedy Club has garnered in the comedy community,” he added.
