Speaking at a media briefing on Thursday, he stressed the gravity of the situation, emphasizing the urgent need for collective action.

Highlighting the alarming trend of prisoners gaining access to illicit items, particularly cellphones smuggled in by visitors or personnel, Mmusi detailed the serious implications for security within and beyond prison walls.

"The utilization of cellphones by inmates poses a considerable threat, fostering connections with the outside world and criminal networks, potentially leading to further illicit activities," he said.

Expressing his profound concern, Mmusi urged citizens to prioritise law-abiding behaviour, cautioning against activities that enable prisoners to obtain forbidden items.

"Batswana should avoid giving prisoners phones and drugs as these things disturb the sentencing of prisoners," said Mmusi. “Such actions not only hinder the rehabilitation process but may also contribute to ongoing criminal behaviour upon release.”

He urged Batswana to actively support the government in these endeavours, noting that a collaborative approach is required to address the deep-rooted challenges associated with contraband in prisons.

"By acknowledging the severity of the issue and implementing strategic measures, Botswana aims to create a safer and more effective correctional system," said Mmusi.

Mmusi also unveiled the government's plans to upgrade and reconstruct prison facilities nationwide.

"This multi-faceted effort aims to establish a more secure environment for both inmates and staff, incorporating advanced technology to enhance security measures and deter contraband smuggling," he said.

Mmusi reassured the public of the government's dedicated and proactive efforts to improve security, which he said is evidenced by efforts to enhance the correctional system's safety and effectiveness.
