Some Premier League and First Division clubs had petitioned the BFL demanding a shareholders’ meeting where the issue of removing the two was part of the agenda. The main bone of contention is the move to reduce Premier League teams from 16 to 12 over the next three years. However, there is contestation that the decision was not unanimous with some clubs demanding it be rescinded.

The clubs wrote to the BFL CEO, Senzo Mbatha over the need for a shareholders meeting to discuss the thorny issue. However, Mbatha responded to the clubs indicating requests for a meeting but indicated procedure had not been followed.

“The clubs have requested a shareholders’ meeting as per the constitution of the BFL that allows shareholders to call for the meeting provided the shareholders reach the 75% threshold,” Mbatha said in response to MmegiSport inquiries yesterday. “In their request for the meeting, there were four agenda items they sighted that they wanted to discuss and as per your enquiry, the three items were sighted as agenda items. As things stand, the request for the shareholder’s meeting did not comply with that threshold and as such, the BFL office has responded to the clubs accordingly,” he added.

Despite the first drawback for the clubs in the quest to oust the two, efforts are expected to continue, with the decision to trim the teams still in force. “For the issue of the reduction of teams from 16 to 12 throughout three seasons, is a matter that the Board resolved in their last meeting of October 28, 2023,” Mbatha said.
