Serowe Police Station commander, Superintendent Poloko Oteng said the couple’s bodies were found in bush on the outskirts of the village following an alleged misunderstanding that lead to a fight. He said prior to the incidents, the 54-year-old woman who had gone to collect firewood at the bush with her 18-year-old daughter met her partner, a 66-year-old man on the way and they had a misunderstanding. “Their daughter allegedly rushed to the village to seek help and on arrival she found her mother lying in a pool of blood with stabbed wounds while her father was hanging from a tree,” Oteng said. “We suspect that he might have stabbed the mother of his kids with a sharp object and committed suicide by hanging.”

He pleaded with lovers to seek help when encountering problems in their affairs and refrain from killing each other. Oteng said incidents where force is used and people end up being killed remain a concern in his policing area despite their efforts to sensitise the public to respect the sanctity of human life. “How could such an old couple like this fight in front of their daughter to a point of killing each other? I am pleading with members of the public, especially partners or lovers, to learn to seek help from elders, involve a third party or seek help from the police when troubled than choosing to resolve disputes through violent means,” Oteng said.
