The party, which is one of the country’s oldest main opposition, turned 58 on October 10.

Its secretary general Ketlhalefile Motshegwa urged structures of the party to organise and host celebratory events throughout the country.

He also urged the BNF members to mark this important milestone by continuing to spread the message of the party as outlined in all BNF pamphlets.

“They have further been urged to spread the message of BNF as outlined in BNF Social Democratic Programme, Pamphlet number 1, Strategic Plan, all other party literature in advancement of social justice, and genuine economic liberation and empowerment of our people,” Motshegwa said.

He explained that this is importantly relevant as the country is collapsing into a failed state owing to the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) economic policy failures, poor social services, unemployment, high corruption, decay in democracy, continued violation of human rights and workers rights, weakening democratic and oversight institutions, arrogant and unaccountable leadership.

Furthermore, Motshegwa said the commemoration of the BNF day comes in the month of October, which also warrants the need to commemorate the great October socialist revolution in remembrance of the socialist victory led by Vladimir Lenin‘s Bolshevik Party in 1917, which signifies the power of the masses and that socialism is the answer to the plight of the people. The BNF was founded in 1965 immediately after the country’s self governing elections. Its formation was aimed to unite the opposition which had split in the earlier years and mobilise all the progressive forces under one banner to take over power from BDP.
