Teen artistic strides put food on the table

In an interview with Arts and Culture, Phetolo said he has created 15 paintings and about 25 drawings using the same art mediums. He stated that since he performed poorly in his Junior Certificate Examination (JCE), he has been exploiting art to make money.
Thus far, he said his artworks have generated money and are also a source of his livelihood.
Phetolo indicated that he was inspired by his junior school art teacher and fellow colleagues to take art seriously.
He stated that the inspirational words and seasoned advice from his art teacher had a significant influence on him and had helped him overcome his self-doubt.
“I failed my Form 3 and at the time felt a little bit dejected. My art teacher saved me by urging me to use my artistic abilities to make money”, the former student stated.
He also said he attempted to return to school in order to retake his JCE, but he quit BOCODOL sessions after realising he lacked academic aptitude. He said his family’s financial condition was not ideal and he was not so enthusiastic about pursuing an academic career.
The same factors led him to commit himself to art and devise strategies for turning his talent into a lucrative business. Phetolo said after testing the waters, he was able to contribute to household income.
He said his long-term goal is to become a major force in art and be amongst those mentioned in the history books. The young artist stated that he intends to demonstrate through artistic talent that not being academically bright needs not prevent one from dreaming because the sky is the limit. He challenged young people to use their skills to earn money rather than underestimating themselves. He said that lack of support from the community and shortages of supplies were two of the main problems in his art development.
