Pedestrian injured after being hit by a car

Following a head-on collision, one of the vehicles overturned and rolled out of the road. The vehicle ended up hitting the pedestrian who was walking by the roadside. This was confirmed to MmegiOnline by Gaborone West Police Station Traffic officer, Assistant Superintendent, Onkemetse Mahatlhe, who stated that the accident occured yesterday at around 8:30am after a VW Polo collided with a Toyota Camry.

"It looks like one of the drivers failed to stop at the traffic lights resulting in the collision. The VW Polo was driven by a 27-year-old woman while the Toyota Camry was driven by a 26-year-old man who had two passengers on board and all of them escaped the accident with minor injuries," she said.

Mahatlhe said the seriously injured pedestrian is currently hospitalized at Sidilega Private Hospital. She further said the injured pedestrian is in a critical condition.

The traffic officer pleaded with motorists to observe traffic lights at all times including at night. She explained that most of the serious accidents that sometimes lead to fatalities occur as a result of drivers not obeying traffic lights.

"This is a serious concern as we continue to lose people to accidents that occur by the traffic lights and in most cases drivers will be driving under the influence of alcohol. Moreover, we have observed that majority of drivers do not observe arrows when turning by the traffic lights putting themselves at risk of unnecessary accidents," Mahatlhe said.
