As per the norm, the BMS hosts the national championship through its member affiliated clubs who take turns in hosting the championship rounds. Over the weekend, the Bontleng Motoride Club (BMC) hosted a Renaissance Motocross Fun-Day at the Mmopane Race Track.

The event was to rally support for the discipline in an effort to ready for the 2024 season. The event had just over 25 entries as riders showed the hunger for the sport on the race track. It was the first motocross event of the year. Speaking to Sport Monitor, BMC’s public relations officer, Kagiso Stephens said the number of entries shows growth and enthusiasm for the sport.

“This is our first event as Bontleng Motoride Club, and we plan on hosting a full championship next year and a few nationals. We are in discussion with the BMS and see how we can meet each other half way. But definitely next year we will be running a full season,” Stephens said. He further rallied up the private sector to lend a helping hand in developing the sport. As compared to other disciplines of motorsport, motocross has proven to be a bit costly to host and Stephens said with more sponsors the sport can grow and reach international standards.

“Our riders have the potential but you cannot improve in the sport unless you put your heart to it. It requires a lot of hard work and I am sure with hosting these types of events, we can match the international standards. This country has produced a lot good rides and this is all what it takes. So we need sponsors for these events and definitely we can match international standards,” he said.
