Raul Bryan makes it big internationally

The 29-year-old producer and DJ from Thamaga, who is currently based in Dubai, told Arts & Culture in an interview that his musical journey began in May 2013 after he learnt how to produce before delving into deejaying.
Despite being relatively new in the music scene, Raul Bryan has already experienced the highs of the industry after performances in countries such as Mozambique, South Africa and Dubai.
He has also performed at big events like the GIMC, Afro-Tech Fest, Gaabo Motho and So Deep Experience.
“In Dubai, I am a resident DJ at Oxygen Club, which is located in the Finance Centre. With ample time on my hands, I discovered purpose in music and pursued it wholeheartedly.
The reception abroad has been heartwarming, especially given the commercialisation of the genre I specialise in. Botswana, too, has shown me immense love,” he explained.
He further pointed out that he has had the privilege of working with notable figures such as Suraj from Kenya, DJ Satellite, Benny T and Priscilla K, adding that he also remixed tracks for Groovy Souls, Kuchi and Samantha Mongwe. He said some of the standout tracks he has include ‘Hold On’ featuring Saltie, Suraj’s Dimbale Dub Remix, and WENA WEDWA featuring Msiz Kay.
Raul Bryan also said penetrating the music scene in a relatively small country presented its challenges while the international market operated differently. He added that financial constraints could be a hindrance. Additionally, he said music consumption trends in Botswana differ from those in more developed countries, making competition tough. He further explained that it had been a significant milestone to be play-listed by industry heavyweights like Black Coffee and Shimza on Spotify. He pointed out that he also received a YAMA Award in 2018 and achieved a top five spot on Traxsource.
“Looking ahead, I envision myself playing at renowned events like Siyava in Bali, Hi Ibiza, and Gondwana Ke. I also aspire to establish my own record label and embark on a European tour.
To aspiring artists, I would emphasise the importance of dreaming big and actively pursuing those dreams. Financial investment in one’s career is crucial. I even worked in a restaurant to support my musical journey at one point,” he said.
Meanwhile, Raul Bryan said he is planning on dropping an EP soon. He explained that he was excited to share some fresh tunes with the people of Botswana and beyond. He said together with his team, he has put a lot of heart into that project.
