It only takes a strong and dedicated person to do so especially in a country like Botswana where the creative industry market is still small. Busi Mabula has proved to be one of the strongest and passionate creative minds in the country. Addressing her fans, family and friends at her Art Exhibition at Black in Mogobe Plaza, CBD on Saturday, Mabula explained that her journey in the art industry was never easy but her passion drove her.

“Five years ago, I did not know I would be here today. Deep down I knew I was going to do something that would make me known. I have always known that I was an artist. I have always been misunderstood. I knew there was something always kicking in. I am sorry mum and dad, your daughter is not going to be an engineer or doctor. I am going to be a creative artist,” she explained.

However, she pointed out that trying to pursue her art career was difficult. She said she experienced both the negatives and positives in her career journey adding that despite all she went through, her experiences made her who she is today. She told the audiences who came in large numbers that she decided to pursue a degree in business because it would help her run her art business.

Mabula also said she was an art advocate who aspired to fight for young artists’ rights and sensitize the public about the importance of art. She said she plans to change the narrative that creative artists cannot sustain themselves through it. She urged parents to support their children who are passionate about arts. The talented young woman also promised to put Botswana on the map by selling her work to the world.

For her part, Mother Masire said she met Mabula few years back at an exhibition where she picked her energy and fell in love with her immediately. She explained that Mabula’s smile and voice attracted her the most. She applauded the artist for a stunning exhibition saying the colours from her paintings tell a lot about her. She added that Mabula’s art portrayed a vulnerable, sensitive and respectful young woman that portrays here.

Her friends and family who gave speeches also pointed out that Mabula’s passion for art started at a tender age. They said she lived and breathed art. Her passion for fine art started when she was just a baby where she would take her father’s building plans that fascinated her. When at junior secondary school, she decided to take the art subject as her practical.

On her display, there were paints showcasing nature. She explained that she loved nature. Her colour combinations were also breath taking. She also drew pairing paintings of a couple (man and woman) looking at each other passionately. She said she drew the couple because she believes in the institution of marriage. She also has different paintings such as animals and some bike rider and others. In all, her paintings have deep meanings.
