Palapye Member of Parliament (MP), Oneetse Ramogapi didn't mince his words when taking a swipe at the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP). Ramogapi made the remarks during a star rally following the 59th national council of the BDP, which took place in his 'backyard'.

The BDP descended upon Palapye over weekend for its highly-anticipated special congress and national council. Taking the stage, Ramogapi invited journalists to investigate the area where the BDP had held its weekend event, asserting that there was a significant amount of 'litter' and discarded condoms. "Batho ba ntshenyetsa kgaolo. Ne ba jele ba kgotse," (Loosely translated to mean "they have ruined my area.

There is dirt all over"), Ramogapi declared. "Palapye has an awful smell because of the BDP and its members. What they did in Palapye is an embarrassment. There are condoms everywhere," the incumbent MP went on. Ramogapi, one of the five MPs expelled from the Botswana Congress Party (BCP), expressed gratitude to the Botswana Patriotic Front (BPF) for organising the star rally on the eve of the BDP council's closure, believing that it would breathe fresh life into Palapye. Despite President Mokgweetsi Masisi's announcement of the recruitment of hundreds of new members from the Zezuru community and Robert Masitara, Ramogapi remains confident of another victory next year’s general election. "I remain resolute.

I am sure the people of Palapye will make the right choice and vote for the UDC. I decided to stay with the UDC when the BCP didn't want to affiliate," he said. The star rally, which had a moderate turnout, also featured speeches from leaders of both the UDC (Umbrella for Democratic Change) and BPF, including the newly appointed BPF president, Mephato Reatile.
