President Mokgweetsi Masisi reaffirmed this during the BDP National Council and Extraordinary Congress held in Palapye over the weekend. In an impassioned introduction of Tsogwane, Masisi described him as the longest-serving Member of Parliament (MP), the most experienced and a dedicated, disciplined cadre of the party. "My choice of VP today and tomorrow," Masisi declared firmly, dismissing any speculation of Tsogwane's removal from the VP position in favour of Serame. "Serame will not be my VP. Tsogwane is my VP, please understand," Masisi emphasised.

He also clarified that any separate discussions between Serame and Tsogwane were unrelated to his decision. Since securing the BDP chairpersonship in a contest against former minister Nonofo Molefhi at the BDP elective congress in Tsabong last year, Tsogwane has grown increasingly confident in his prospects of ascending to the presidency. Unsubstantiated rumours have circulated about a plan to expedite Serame's political career within the party, potentially positioning her as the nation's first female Vice President.

However, Tsogwane appears unruffled by this speculation. Despite reports suggesting the Women’s Wing chairperson, Serame's favour amongst BDP power players, Tsogwane remains resolute in his belief that his VP position is secure. Masisi's endorsement in Palapye serves as a significant affirmation of Tsogwane's path to becoming the country's oldest president at the age of 68 should BDP be victorious.

To Tsogwane, Serame may understudy Masisi, but she does not stand as the heir apparent. Tsogwane, MP since 1999, would assume office at 68 if he were to succeed Masisi in 2028, following the customary two-term presidential cycle.

Tsogwane claims never to have lost an election, despite initially considering retirement from politics before the 2019 elections, when the plan was to make way for the younger and dynamic former Trade minister, Bogolo Kenewendo.

Nevertheless, circumstances shifted, and Tsogwane retained his position while Kenewendo stepped aside. Tsogwane's close association with Masisi since being appointed VP in 2018 has solidified his political standing. Therefore, anyone underestimating the significance of the VP position within the BDP does so at their own risk as Tsogwane could very well become the country's next President. He is the heir apparent and next in the line of succession for the role.
