Given the alarming numbers of reported cases we experience, let us take a walk back and consider this virus once more: Let us start off with an age old question: What is HIV? What is HIV? HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) is a virus that attacks the body's immune system. If HIV is not treated, it can lead to AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). There is currently no effective cure.

How is HIV transmitted? HIV is transmissible through contact with blood, semen, vaginal fluid, anal mucus and breast milk, if the person with HIV has a detectable viral load. It's not passed on by spitting, sneezing or coughing. What is the treatment for HIV? There is no cure for HIV infection. It is treated with antiretroviral drugs, which stop the virus from replicating in the body.

Antiretrovirals work by stopping the virus replicating in the body. This allows the immune system to repair itself and prevent further damage. A combination of HIV drugs is used because HIV can quickly adapt and become resistant.

What can I do? With HIV you are either infected or affected. End HIV stigma and support those infected; encourage them to take their antiretrovirals as per doctors' instruction. Apply the ABC of HIV: Abstain, Be faithful and Condomise. It can only be when we join hands and cooperate that we can reduce the new infections and promote health and wellness.
