In a draw conducted in Abidjan last night, the Zebras were pitted against former African champions, Algeria, Guinea, Uganda, Mozambique and Somalia. It is Algeria and Guinea that could pose a serious threat to Zebras' chances of progressing. However, Mpote told Mmegi Sport last night that there is a good chance of qualifying, provided the preparations are spot on.

"I am going in there confident of qualifying. They are all strong teams, but the draw is ok. We need to prepare well and then we can beat any team. If you win at home, then your chances of qualifying are good," Mpote said.

He said while sides like Algeria are strong due to the presence of foreign based players, it all boils down to preparation. Mpote is fresh from the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and COSAFA Cup disappointment.

However, he is more optimistic going to the World Cup qualifiers, where the Zebras are seeking a maiden appearance. It will be the second time the Zebras face Algeria in recent times after the two squared up in the 2023 AFCON qualifiers. The draw saw the 54 countries split into nine groups, with the winners qualifying, while the four best placed teams from all the groups, going into a battle for a continental play-off spot.
