Letlhakane police investigate three rape cases

The Letlhakane Police Station commander, Superintendent Michael Maphephu told The Monitor that the first incident took place last Wednesday night. According to Maphephu, it was alleged that a 15-year-old girl of Tawana was raped by his 36-year-old neighbour.

He said the neighbour sneaked into the young girl’s house in the absence of her parents and sexually assaulted her. Maphephu stated that when the young victim’s parents returned home, she shared the devastating news of the incident with them and they reported the matter to the police.

“We conducted a DNA test on the victim and are awaiting results from the forensic lab,” he added. Maphephu indicated the man is still in police custody as investigations on the matter continue. In a similar incident, the Letlhakane station head said they have arrested a 20-year-old man of Mmatshumo village for sexually assaulting a 61-year-old woman in her sleep in the same week. He said a 20-year-old male took advantage of the woman by breaking into her unsecured home while she was sleeping.

“The suspect found the house unlocked and he proceeded to rape the woman who was napping at the time taking advantage of her. The old woman lives alone,” he said. Maphephu said the woman was able to identify the offender and he was apprehended 20 kilometres away from the village.

On another note, the Letlhakane police chief said they searching for an unknown person who raped a 30-year-old woman at Setoto Lands. He appealed to the community with information relating to the matter to assist, so that the culprit is taken into police custody.
