The Land Board mission was to run down fences of those who had illegally allocated themselves plots at Nkoyaphiri. This Land Board action was meant to be a precursor to destructing structures built on illegally occupied land.
Around 60 incensed and highly charged residents initially started pelting the JCB and its driver with all sorts of missiles ranging from stones, bricks and even whipped the JCB driver with sjamboks forcing him to stop what he was assigned to do.
They would later seize the JCB key.
The incensed rioters even slashed the tyre of a JCB disabling it from continuing with its mission. This happened just under the noses of the members of the BPS who couldn’t match the angry crowd as it kept on growing in numbers wielding all possible missiles and ready for an encounter with the police.
The Kweneng Land Board chairperson Kgang Kgang had earlier instructed the JCB driver to bring down illegal structures in an area in which about 300 illegal squatters had set up. Unfortunately, the number of rioters kept on increasing forcing the police to call off the destruction of the squatters, temporarily.
