Arts festival exhibition experiences drop

The exhibition is part of the ongoing Regional competitions across the country where participants battle for the national championship places. It pitted the young and upcoming artists against the experienced ones.

Exhibition curator and coordinator Goitseone Musonda said this year’s competition attracted a high number of submissions. However, Musonda bemoaned a drop in the standards during the 2023 competitions saying most artists work are not up to scratch. Musonda also said there were a few outstanding artworks across categories; most of the artworks were substandard.

"You would find in other instances that artists have submitted artworks under wrong categories. This showed that the artists didn't even understand their work or the type of artwork they do. But there were a few others whose work was outstanding as well," Musonda said.

Under the basket and crafts, the categories included beadwork, traditional pottery, woodcarvings, tapestry, jewellery, textile, and basketry. The fine arts categories were drawing, painting, print making, mixed media, photography and sculpture.
