BDP Grabs Marulamantsi

The outcome was a blow to the main opposition BNF who won the seat at the last general elections. The seat fell vacant when the BNF councillor, Kabo Masole died. Although close to 1,300 people are registered to vote in the ward, only 400 participated in the by-election. At the time of counting, it was obvious that the BNF would fare badly. For sometime, the new councillor was a dark horse because of her failure to speak at political rallies. But after her victory, she said she was not surprised because they worked hard. Lekau pointed out that her ward is very small and underdeveloped. She said that she was going to launch a clean-up campaign in Marulamantsi. 'It is important to have our roads put in the development plans. The ward needs a primary school as most children in the area are attending schools in other locations far from home.'

The BDP campaign coordinator and parliamentary candidate for Gaborone West South, Botsalo Ntuane, said that Lekau's victory was a mission accomplished because his party was now standing on an equal footing with the BNF with 16 councillors at the Gaborone City Council (GCC).

'The intention ultimately is to ensure that GCC is run by a competent authority,' he said.
