This comes a few days after Botswana Police Services launched the Kgomokhumo VI Operation at Letlhakeng village.
Kgomokhumo Operation is mandated to curb the increasing incidents of stock theft and in the process restore farmers’ confidence in livestock farming and trust in the police.
No2 District officer commanding, Senior Superintendent Paul Oketsang said they are investigating an incident of stock theft which was reported on Saturday morning. He said the 35-year-old complainant from Extension 2 in Palapye reported that she found the cowhide belonging to one of her cattle at the Radisile dumping site near Bikwe Lands.
Oketsang stated that they managed to recognise it through the identification mark on the cowhide which was dumped at the site. He added they suspect that the thieves might have sold some of the beef from the cow to local butcheries or street food vendors. Oketsang said: “We are appealing for any information on this incident which may or may not be related.
This crime has become relatively common in our policing area.” He further said the loss of cattle can have such a devastating and lasting impact on farmers and their families.
Oketsang said stock theft has increased over the last three years. He sampled that they recorded 35 cases of stock theft during the first quarter, January to March of 2021, and 26 during the same period last year. This year in the same quarter of the year, the area registered 82 cases of stock theft, he added.
