The women’s league football is currently played at regional level in the country. In 2016, the BFA dismantled the then, Super League which was mainly contested by teams in the South.

Since the move, the women’s game has spread throughout the country as league football is played in all the BFA blocks in exception of the Western block. Speaking at the launch of the DTCB Women’s Championship playoffs, the BFA chief executive officer Mfolo Mfolo said the association is in a position to introduce the national league after an increase of participation in the women’s game. The number of teams in the leagues has risen from 47 to 132 in just two seasons while the leagues have increased from six to 11.

Mfolo also said the formation of the national league will need more partners to invest the local women’s game. “We have a deliberate intention in our contract agreed objectives with FIFA that two years down the line, we will be starting the national women football league.

It is a very expensive terrain we will be undertaking and we need more partners to come on board to commercialise women's football,” Mfolo said. Currently, the Diamond Trading Company (DTC) Botswana remains the sole financier of the women’s league football.

The DTC Botswana agreed to invest P1.3million per season for the next three years from 2022. The DTCB Women’s Championship playoffs kicked off this weekend with the Eastern Block games played in Orapa.
