The accident, which involved a Toyota Vits and an Audi A3, occurred at around 6:00am near Kgorwana Lands. In an interview, Dibete Police Station commander, Superintendent Meshack Ranku said one car had four people onboard including the driver, all Zimbabwean nationals, while the other vehicle had three people, all Batswana.

“Both drivers, a 55-year-old Zimbabwean man who is a resident of Old Naledi in Gaborone and a 29-year-old Motswana man of Molema ward, Matlhakola village were killed in this mishap along with two Zimbabwean passengers,” he told The Monitor. “The passengers are all women aged between 28 and 58 who are residents of Old Naledi and Block 10, Gaborone respectively.” Ranku stated that the other three passengers escaped death by a whisker and are currently fighting for their lives at a Mahalapye hospital after sustaining serious injuries.

He stated the surviving passengers are two Batswana men aged between 24 and 28, both of Matlhakola village in Madimane and Molema wards and a 49-year-old Zimbabwean woman who is a resident of Old Naledi. “The two cars were heading in opposite directions, north and south, and we suspect one of the drivers might have lost control of the car and shifted to the other lane resulting in the collision. However, investigations into the matter are ongoing to establish what happened,” he said.

Ranku further revealed that road traffic accidents that claim people's lives along A1 Highway remain a concern pleading with motorists to exercise patience on the roads at all times, obey road signs, and rest when they are fatigued. He further cautioned drivers against overspeeding which he pointed out to be the leading cause of most accidents along the A1 Highway.
