BDP secretary-general, Kavis Kario on Sunday told The Monitor the retreat was basically to review if government policies and programmes are aligned with the party imperatives as set out in our election manifesto.

“This helps us as a party to check if our promises are aligned with what government does and where we can do better. We measure our chances for delivery on our promises since the elections and see areas where we were able to deliver and where we are still lacking,” he said.

“As the ruling party, the government is the one that pushes our promises and it is our responsibility to deliver on our promises and to ensure that Batswana do live a better life.” Still, on the matter, Kario said they are the only ones who could call for improvement when necessary.

He said this kind of retreat helps them to do better and also to know the obstacles that exist delaying them from delivering on some of the promises. He added, as the ruling party, the manifesto is their guidance as it was done based on what Batswana had called for.

The BDP secretary-general said their retreat had identified areas of improvement in service delivery across all sectors and the need to fast-track the implementation of e-government services. He said they have further resolved to increase the frequency of these meetings to improve and synchronise the functionality of both party and government. He, however, said this is not a new thing to be done by the BDP but it was not popular.

The Monitor has learnt that the BDP is holding such retreats as a way to find areas that it wants to improve before the 2024 General Election and to improve the pace at which they are doing things.
