This incident follows a series of arrests made by the police in the same village connected to the illegal possession of drugs, more especially marijuana and methcathinone (CAT).

Two weeks ago, police in Letlhakane arrested a 40-year-old man in Nkosho ward suspected to be a drug peddler. The suspected seller was found in possession of a 10kg box containing a substance suspected to be marijuana and a large plastic estimated to be about 500 grammes containing CAT. Letlhakane Police Station commander, Superintendent Michael Maphephu said that six people including two women were arrested on different occasions last week following a tip-off.

He said that four of the suspects were caught red-handed packing marijuana in small packages in Phase 1 location. Adding that others were arrested when they went to buy the green substance, suspected to be dagga. “When the police on duty searched the house, they managed to seize only 87 small sachets filled with marijuana,” he added.

The seized drugs' total street value is estimated to be about P1,300 whereas one sachet is priced at P15 each. He said that the availability of drugs shows that there is a market in Letlhakane village. Additionally, police believe that the village is now turning into a hub for illicit drug trade because the new cases are a clear indication that huge amounts of drugs might be discreetly entering the village, said Maphephu. He added that to curb the illegal drug trade, the police have embarked on an operation that aims at preventing drugs from proliferating on their streets and nightspots.
