She was responding to a Mmegi questionnaire this week on wide ranging questions on the Board’s effectiveness in handling the matter which has become a hot topic in recent days.

However, questions abound as to whether the action by the Board to hand the file to the law enforcement agency may be just to save face, as the University Board appears to be publicly rallying behind the BIUST VC in various media fora.

The police investigations were called in after the Board had declared the BIUST leader not guilty of any allegations in the report.

BOSETU secretary-general Tobokani Rari says he is surprised by the order of the actions that the Board chose to go with. “The Board decided to set the VC free first and then call the police later after declaring Prof Totolo innocent. In our view, such actions by the BIUST Board only serve to use the police to rubber stamp the position already taken, being to close ranks with the VC, while desperately trying to make it look like something is being done. Ordinarily the BIUST Board should have withheld any pronunciation of innocence of their VC, put the BIUST leader on indefinite suspension from office to allow the police and the BIUST community to cooperate without any visible intimidation at work. Otherwise the whole thing seems like a cover-up, a sham, a facade, for undiscerning minds”, the BOSETU chief said, adding that as the teaching sector trade union they do not have confidence in the BIUST Board’s decision to call the police on Totolo.
