Speaking at the full council meeting on Monday, council chairperson, Daniel Molokwe said the fencing of the landfill site has improved the security of goods and personnel working at the site.

He said entry or exit from the site is only through the main gate. “The removal of abandoned clinical waste at the landfill project which was budgeted for P800,000 managed to remove 50.4 tonnes of waste for safe disposal.

The project exhausted the allocated funds while about five tonnes of waste still remained and a supplementary budget of P100,000 was approved to complete the project.

The removal exercise is anticipated to be complete by April 2023,” he said. Furthermore, Molokwe said an amount of P91,000 has also been approved for the hire of plant particularly tipper trucks, loaders, and dozers to transfer waste that was deposited outside the fence into the main landfill site.

However, he said the project is still at the procurement stage. He also revealed that the Expression of Interest (EOI) for the operation and management of the old Pilane landfill closed on December 19, 2022, and the EOI is at the evaluation stage.

Additionally, Molokwe indicated that outsourcing waste management has created 68 jobs this financial year at a cost of P5.1 Million. Still on the matter, he said indiscriminate disposal of waste remains one of the most crucial environmental challenges that the district is facing.

The council leader said as they proceed to develop and improve the standard of living, the amount and types of waste generated increases every day. “This calls for a change in our disposal methods by way of composting, separation and recycling. These options can convert waste into assets and can assist in generating employment and income,” he said.
