The major players in the educator sector at the signing ceremony held in the Boitekanelo College campus in Gaborone were in agreement that educators in the country are lacking in some aspects of entrepreneurship and health education hence the need for further training. The members through the MoU also offered counselling at Boitekanelo College.

Speaking at the ceremony, Boitekanelo College provost, Dr Tiroyaone Mampane said through the MoU, educators will acquire skills and knowledge in health and entrepreneurship amongst others. He said the main objective of the MoU is to capacitate BOSETU members in health and education while the members have also been allowed to further their education with Boiketanelo College's short courses programme. “We are looking at short courses around entrepreneurship for our members so that as they prepare to exit their jobs, we implore them to have side hustles, so they will have the necessary skills to run their businesses accordingly. So at the core of our partnership, it is of mutual benefit from both partners that we continue to move towards a knowledge-based economy as a country,” Mampane said.

He also highlighted that Boitekanelo College is committed to playing a contributory role by advancing members of BOSETU by equipping them with the necessary skillset and mindset that aid them to prosper in their professional and personal roles. For his part, BOSETU national organising secretary, Mmoloki Bopa said the partnership offers educators substantive post-retirement plans as the members are to acquire skills to make a living beyond their active teaching days.

“With Boitekanelo within our fold, we believe that our members are going to be influenced in one way or another in terms of the lifestyles they are going to pursue during their service to the public and beyond upon retirement. Botswana is experiencing a tremendous economic metamorphosis in terms of the approach that Batswana want to take in uplifting themselves and the economy of the country in general. So we are aware that is difficult to manage and run those enterprises without the necessary skills and knowledge so our members are going to benefit from the short courses in Boitekanelo College,” Bopa said.

He further highlighted that psycho counselling services will help in the livelihoods of educators as they are faced with mental strains in their daily professional and personal lives.
