‘Education system renders students' future hopeless’- BOSETU

According to statistics released by Botswana Examinations Council (BEC) last week, a total of 35,199 candidates sat for the 2022 exams, and only 5079 managed to attain 6cs or better.
BOSETU believes that the glaring statistic speaks volumes about the country’s education system.
“There is no doubt that it’s the education system that throws multitudes of young people into the streets, rendering them helpless, hopeless and spells a bleak future for them,” reads a press statement from BOSETU.
“We as well note that the highest performing school in the 2022 BGCSE examinations has only mastered a 37.21% of candidates who obtained 6Cs or better in any of the subjects that they wrote. While we commend teachers at St. Josephs for putting their school on first spot and doing their all against all odds, we as well are of the view that 37.21% as a first position, points to a terrible failure of schools and all candidates who sat for the 2022 BGCSE.,” the statement further reads.
According to BOSETU the statistics speak to an ailing and dwindling education system and is a telling story about the ordeal that is the education system.
“We would like to repeat what we have always agitated for as BOSETU, that our education system needs a radical transformation, to shift from theoretical oriented approach , and adopt the current trends that impart skills and competencies that the students have potential in, and which they could use in life situations,” the statements further reads adding that this is what they feel should be mean as a knowledge-based economy.
The overall pass rate for the BGCSE 2022 results, Grade C or better in six syllabuses, is 95.46%. The performance shows a minor decline of 1.63 percent from 97.09% in 2021.
