Maswena's injury sparks fight between rival fans

Rival fans caused a lot of panic among other spectators when they started a fight during a league game between Union Flamengo Santos and Broadhurst United on Saturday

The fight erupted after a Broadhurst United player, Leago Maswena suffered a nasty injury on his leg following a malicious tackle from Goitsemodimo Zoko of Santos. The incident happened near the box and Zoko was given his marching orders. With Maswena still being attended by the medical personnel, some enraged spectators rushed into the field and a fight broke out between them after one of the security personnel whipped a fan. And then stones were thrown all over with other spectators running away for their safety and seeking refuge in their cars. However, the fight was eventually diffused and the match resumed. Both teams played a slow tempo match probably because of the scorching heat but Santos created more chances in the first quarter of the first half. It was not long before they were rewarded with a goal on the 22nd minute. Wabile Kwenaetsile received a delightful cross inside the box and headed it past the goalkeeper.

On the 37th minute Amos Tlhalefang nearly put his side back on level terms as he pulled a long range shot from outside the box but his effort went few inches wide. The two sides went to break with Santos leading by one goal. In the second half, Santos sat back to try and protect their lead and eventually walked away with the much needed three points. During the post match interview, Broadhurst United head coach, Moseki Thebeemang bemoaned the level of refereeing. “Forget about the fight among spectators, my job is inside the ground and I am so worried about the refereeing. The referees are supposed to protect us and because they are failing to do their job, my player's leg is broken,” he said. Meanwhile, head coach for Santos, Stanley Mwaanga felt sorry for Maswena but also elated that his side got to walk away with maximum points. “I am very sorry about the player, there is no one who can enjoy watching a player suffering an injury,” Mwaanga said.
