The Ministry of Labour and Home Affairs permanent secretary, Jimmy Opelo stated that the development is the culmination of the initiative by the two heads of state, Botswana’s President Mokgweetsi Masisi and his Namibian counterpart, President Hage Geingob.

“It’s a clear demonstration of their unwavering commitment to implementing a uniquely progressive aspect of the strategy of bilateral cooperation between the two countries,” a press statement from the ministry reads. According to Opelo, “The agreement will thus serve to eliminate barriers to the free movement of people, goods, and services, thereby strengthening trade between the two countries.”

It is further believed that the use of national identity cards for cross-border travel will enhance the momentum for economic and regional integration and further promote safe and orderly migration.
