This innovative procedure was carried out by a team of accomplished doctors led by Dr Daou Gdeh, a renowned urologist, and Dr Antonia Bunga, an experienced radiation oncologist. Prostate Brachytherapy is a form of internal radiation therapy that involves placing small radioactive 'seeds' inside the prostate gland to destroy cancer cells.

The successful completion of these cases is a significant milestone for the country's medical community, as it means that men with prostate cancer now have access to an advanced form of treatment that was not previously available in Botswana. The use of brachytherapy in the treatment of prostate cancer has shown efficacy, with minimal side effects and a high success rate.

This achievement builds on Medlane's project of introducing the first Mobile Mammography Unit in the country, highlighting commitment to the screening and treatment of cancer in Botswana. With early detection being crucial to cancer treatment, such screening methods and innovative treatments can significantly improve outcomes for patients.

Speaking about the successful procedures, Bunga expressed her excitement for the future of prostate cancer treatment in Botswana.

"We are proud to have been able to provide this advanced treatment option to patients in Botswana. This marks the beginning of a new era in the treatment of prostate cancer in the country, and we are excited to see the positive impact it will have on the health and wellbeing of our patients," Bunga said.

She highlighted that overall, this is an exciting development for the country's medical community and is expected to have a significant impact on the treatment of prostate cancer in Botswana. The successful completion of the first cases of prostate brachytherapy at the hospital will provide hope and confidence to men and their families who are dealing with this disease.
