It's vital for communities to assist police

People in Tutume and surrounding areas are living in fear of a ‘serial killer’ who has so far managed to elude the police, making the situation even more worrisome.

The man who allegedly uses different aliases is so far connected to at least three murders hence why the Botswana Police Service is asking for help from members of the community.

The suspect is reportedly connected to murders that occurred on January 1. The second victim was discovered on January 11 and the third victim’s decomposed body was found by the son on January 24. Gone are the days when we used to read about or watch tales of serial killers on television. We do have such individuals in our midst! Sadly, some within our communities see nothing wrong with harbouring such criminals.

This young man, if he is the one who is causing havoc in the area, should be arrested sooner than later to safeguard the lives of members of society. So far, the ‘serial killer’ seems to have pounced on two elderly members of the community as well as a young boy, who would be defenceless against a killer on any given day. All of us have a right to life. Our right to life is protected by the law, hence why law enforcement is on the hunt for the culprit. While it is common sense that he is in hiding because he knows the police are searching for him, some people know where he is, and who can help the police with such information.

Botswana Police Service has a lot on its plate, and sadly, we the very same people who are quick to complain are usually the very first to frustrate their efforts to maintain law and order, which in turn will reduce our fear of being attacked and thus improve the quality of life for all of us! This is our country, let's work hand-in-hand with the police and others in law enforcement to assist in cleaning our streets. It is not a good feeling for anyone to sleep with one eye open or to always be concerned that their elderly mother, father, grandfather, grandmother, and other relatives might be attacked and killed by a stranger. Let's also become the eyes and ears of the police and play an active part in assisting them in curbing crime. Botswana was regarded as one of the safest places in the world because it was! Let's bring back that status and make our country safe again. Partnerships accomplish a lot and if we work with the police we can bring our country back to its glory years.
