In a statement released late on Friday, Butale admitted that the recent developments in which some of his members have been resigning have left some members concerned about the state of the party.

However, he does not address the elephant in the room. Members are concerned about the reconciliation process that President Mokgweetsi Masisi and Khama are intending to start.

Khama has made it open that he had asked his brother Tshekedi Khama to return to Botswana from South Africa, where they exiled, in order to get the ball rolling on the negotiations with Masisi or any other person who the President chooses. Last week at an event to welcome Aubrey Lesaso in Shoshong, Masisi told Botswana Democratic Party members that he wishes one day he and Khama could talk and reconcile.

However, in his statement, Butale preferred to say: “First and foremost, we assure all members of the BPF and our sympathisers that the following is still actively working to promote its programme and all matters related. Therefore, patriots can remain calm and focused on the job at hand which is to prepare the ground for regime change in 2024.

We should never be surprised or taken aback when resignations at any level in the party occur as it remains a possibility at any time. It is the nature of politics, particularly on our continent where ruling parties exploit their incumbencies in ways fair and often foul.” He said the BPF as a party remains committed to the objective of regime change regardless of any political turmoil within whether real or perceived.

Butale said his party continues to collaborate with the Umbrella for Democratic Change, other political parties, and individuals in favour of regime change in 2024. The BPF president said in the next few days the National Executive Committee will decide on the appointment of a new vice president of the party.
