When briefing the media today at Gaborone at Central Medical Stores (CMS), Francistown District Health Management Team (DHMT), Dr. Ivan Kgetse said at times they are forced to cancel GPOs when some companies fail to deliver medication as per the agreement and that makes them to follow the same process again or queue again at the supplier.

“Some of the challenges are beyond us as a nation. Currently in Francistown we are cooperating with private clinics to assist us when we have medication challenges and we do assist them as well. Our cooperation started during the COVID-19 outbreak till today. They also face the challenges that we are facing of medicine shortage. It must be noted that private clinics or hospitals do face the same challenge. Again, the demand is high while the delivery is low,” Kgetse said.

Still on the matter, the Minister of Health Edwin Dikoloti said; “It is very important to understand that medicines are manufactured on specific orders for specific countries and manufacturing companies work with big quantities. So, as Botswana with our small population we fail to make enough quantities to the interest manufacturers.”
