For the better half of the festive season, one would not walk for a few minutes without hearing the sound of Likhona. There was no radio which did not blast the single. Both in the cities and in the villages, Likhona dominated.

Fresh from her hectic festive season where she was one of the most booked local artists performing at almost every corner of the country, Charma Gal spoke to Arts & Culture as she reflected on how her single kept her fans dancing throughout the festive season.

Most of Charma Gal’s songs have a deep rooted message behind them and she hardly shares who or what she is exactly referring to her in lyrics.

Now with Likhona, the 38-year-old Lerala-born singer says she came up with the song soon after her show called, ‘Kgosi Ya Mosadi in Concert with Koffi Olomide which was held on October 29, 2022 at the National Stadium.

Under so much pressure, Charma Gal says whilst going through the emotions, it hit her that she had made history; she had dominated conversations of both her well-wishers and those against her. She says her name was all over because she became the first woman in the industry to bring one of Africa’s greatest legends to Botswana.

She says: “Infact Likhona is a gospel type of song because I could see the hand of God with the concert I hosted. I will forever go down memory lane as the first female artist to host Africa’s legend Koffi Olomide with close to zero sponsorship. When I leave this earth, I will forever be Charma Gal who once hosted Koffi.”

Commenting on the make of the song, one of the most followed celebrities in Botswana said: “I remember I woke up one day with an idea and I sent it to my producer, DJ Phathu Young P to compose the song.

My producer did not waste time and he sent back the instrument and I added my vocals.”

At the time of composing the song Charma would have never imagined the single, which took only about a few weeks to complete would dominate radio waves and even social media platforms.

“I am forever thankful to my followers who created challenges with the song especially on Tik Tok because soon after we released the teaser of the song, there was a challenge on Tik Tok and the song went viral,” the singer further shared.

Less than two months after being uploaded on YouTube, Likhona has amassed 46,766 views.

The single track is part of her album which is yet to be launched. Although the date for the launch is yet to be finalised, Charma Gal tells Arts & Culture that she anticipates the launch will be somewhere around March.

After a hectic festive season performing across the country, Charma Gal will not take it easy as she prepares to jet off to Mauritius for a rest before coming back to prepare for her album launch.
