58-year-old Motsumi passed on yesterday at her house following a tragic fire accident, Mmegi has learnt. According to BDP secretary general Kavis Kario, Motsumi became the first female Member of Parliament (MP) for South East South (now Ramotswa) constituency in 1999 and served as Cabinet Minister in various portfolios from 2002 until 2011 when she took up a diplomatic posting as High Commissioner to India. Kario also said Ambassador Motsumi was a dedicated and selfless party cadre who served in the branch and regional committees such as the Branch Veterans Committee until her untimely death.

She ascended through the ranks as a member of the Political Education and Elections Committee (PEEC) subcommittee of the BDP and eventually a member of the Central Committee from 2003-2007. “She was an invaluable member of the former BDP MPs caucus from which we continue to draw wisdom and experiences that guide our policy outlook and commitment to improving the livelihoods of Batswana. The BDP has lost in Motsumi an irreplaceable torchbearer and we'll forever cherish her immeasurable contributions to the success of the BDP. We pass our sincere condolences to the Motsumi family and the people of Ramotswa,” Kario said in an interview. .
