“A brawl ensued between two inmates in a cell at Maun Prison. The incident resulted in one inmate seriously injured and was immediately rushed to Letsholathebe Memorial Hospital, where he unfortunately succumbed to the injuries yesterday, (09 January 2023),” Prison Service Public Relations Officer Senior Superintendent Oagile Kojane stated in a press release.

The deceased is a Zimbabwean national, convict male Michael Phuti (31), who was residing in Magapatona Ward in Tutume. The suspect is a Motswana, convict male Osego Mosetlhane (37), of Kgaphamadi Ward in Gantsi.

“Details on the circumstances leading to the incident have not yet been established as investigations are still on going. Despite this unfortunate incident, Botswana Prison Service remains committed to ensuring safe custodial care of offenders under its care, correction through effective rehabilitation and reintegration programmes for the protection of the society,’ Kojane stated.

At the time of press, Kojane said he was yet to establish what offences the duo had committed and how long they both had to serve.

A quick search on the internet shows that Mosetlhane has made it to the news before when he was charged with threat to kill in 2019. According to the report, Mosetlhane popularly referred to as Cyborg, fresh from Prison dragged the complainant (former lover) from the night club, in full view of patrons and bouncers before threatening to kill her. It was also stated in the same court that Mosetlhane was on bail for crimes which were not stated on the report. It was also revealed that he had history of violence and that he had assaulted a police officer before.

Interestingly, even though he has been in Prison for a while now, Mosetlhane's Facebook profile has been active with his last post being in August 2022.
