According to Mochudi police station commander Joel Masilo, the incident happened around Christmas but was not reported until the woman's relatives observed that the victim's children were home alone for days.

When asked, the woman's 17-year-old daughter said that their mother was admitted to Princess Marina Hospital in Gaborone. The daughter told the relatives that before being taken to the hospital their mother had disclosed that their father who also never went back home since the incident stabbed her with a knife.

“Gender Based Violence (GBV) happens in homes and many women don't report to the police. My advice to couples is to seek help from pastors, dikgosi and request counselling. My advice to men is that when they are angry, fighting or killing partners is not a solution. Let's seek intervention and proper advice from the elders, pastors and non-governmental organisations that deal with men issues. GBV affects people close to us more especially children. Just imagine in this case, a 17 -year-old had to stay behind with her younger siblings when her mother was fighting for her life at a hospital bed while their father disappeared after attacking their mother. It is not good," he said.

He however, pointed out that the woman was recovering while the man was still on the run.
