BDP to hold primaries early

While in some constituencies like Serowe, some members believe that compromise could help them. “Currently the primary elections in all three Serowe constituencies will not be ideal for us. The chances for us to win the three constituencies are very slim, because of the fight between the government and some Bangwato in Serowe. The issue of a warrant of arrest against their chief had also worsened matters. The whole thing will change our chances of winning the area. Palapye and Mahalapye cannot be won, because these fights that are not ending. The primaries might start in the central area, which is under opposition parties including some constituencies in Gaborone. Even though Gaborone constituencies are currently under BDP, one cannot rely on them, because there is no consistency regarding the election outcome,” the source said in an interview today. Umbrella for Democratic Change currently has 14 elected Members of Parliament (MPs), Botswana Patriotic Front four and Alliance for Progressives one, while the BDP has 38 excluding specially nominated MPs. However, the BDP secretary general Kavis Kario said; “primaries are not set yet. But it is most likely to be beyond August 2023.”
