The quintet was arrested following a three-day operation in the area that targeted suspected drug lords and managed to seize sealed bundles of substances suspected to be marijuana.

No 6 District Officer Commanding, Senior Superintendent Thari Senwelo said they held a three-day operation from December 16 to 18 and managed to arrest and charge five people suspected to be marijuana dealers in possession of rolls and sachets of dagga.

Senwelo said the four men aged 24, 26, 27, and 34 years respectively were arrested in the first two days with 38 rolls of suspected dagga estimated to weigh about 258 grammes with a street value of around P1,500. “Looking at its quantity, I suspect that they might be marijuana dealers and might have an established market.

Moreover, they are not first-time offenders, we have once arrested and charged them after they were also found in possession of marijuana. Dagga use is on the rise in Gantsi and worries us as it affects people’s lives, especially the youth,” he said. Senwelo said the impact of drug use can be more disturbing as it can affect people’s lives, ruin their futures, fuel crime, and threaten the country’s economy.

Senwelo said they have observed that some Batswana have found a business opportunity in selling drugs because they always arrest the same individuals. He further stated a 38-year-old woman in the same area was also found in possession of big rolls of substances suspected to be marijuana valued at around P10,000 weighing 1.8kg.

Senwelo stated that they also suspect that just like the first suspects, she is also a suspected marijuana dealer. Furthermore, he cautioned Gantsi residents over the high use of drugs, which he pointed out to be currently spiralling out of control. The senior police officer stated that the quintet has been charged with the offence of unlawful possession of dagga.
