The accident occurred at around 12:30am and Serowe’s assistant police station commander, Assistant Superintendent Bophelo Ntatiwa confirmed the accident to The Monitor.

He stated that then, the deceased who had sustained serious head injuries was rushed to Sekgoma Memorial Hospital where she later succumbed to the injuries. “The driver of a Toyota RunX, a 35-year-old man who had initially failed to remain at the accident scene has been arrested and is currently in police custody helping the police with investigations.

He has been charged with failure to remain at the accident scene and causing death by careless driving,” Ntatiwa said. In another accident that occurred on Sunday, police are also investigating a mishap in which a pedestrian was hit by a car which landed him in a hospital in Bokaa.

Investigating the case, Deputy Divisional Traffic Officer for South-Central Senior Superintendent Boiki Mojalemotho said a 38-year-old man, who was driving a Toyota Corolla, landed another man in hospital after hitting him while trying to cross the road near Saverite Supermarket. “The accident occurred at around 2:15am. The victim who is currently fighting for his life at Deborah Retief Memorial Hospital sustained fractures in both legs and serious head injuries. We are yet to establish his age because the victim is still critical and cannot speak,” Mojalemotho said.

Mojalemotho said they are still looking for the driver who left the accident scene after reporting the matter. “We do not know why he decided to leave the accident scene after reporting the matter to the police but investigations are ongoing to locate and arrest him,” Mojalemotho said. Mojalemotho said accidents that involve pedestrians are a concern because people continue to lose their lives at the hands of impatient drivers and some pedestrians were left with permanent injuries that lead to living with disabilities.

"Drivers should know that they share the road with pedestrians, cyclists, and even animals. The majority of drivers are always in a hurry, forgetting that they share the road with pedestrians showing no respect to them. This is worrisome because some people were in the past killed by cars whilst right in the middle of a pedestrian crossing,” Mojalemotho said.
