The accused, Nonofang Radidery, allegedly attacked and violated the complainant, who cannot be named for legal reasons, on June 15 in a bush nearby Tati River.

According to the charge sheet, Radidery robbed the woman of a mobile phone worth P1,500.

He is alleged to have employed violence when attacking the complainant before and after he committed the offences.

When Radidery appeared before Senior Magistrate Thapelo Buang today (Tuesday) for arraignment after the charge sheet was amended to include the charge of rape, Radidery surprised the court and the public in the gallery after he asked if he was still a suspect or not. He also applied for bail.

In response to what Radidery had asked, the Senior Magistrate said: “You have just pleaded not guilty to the offences of robbery and rape and as such you are now an accused person.”

Buang added: “With regards to the issue of bail, you were previously denied bail and advised to apply for bail at the High Court.”

After Radidery’s brief arraignment in court, Buang further remanded him in jail and scheduled the matter for December 13 for Initial Case Management Conference.
