The third edition of Just Sex was held at Cresta Lodge in Gaborone. The event turned out to be a success story as it attracted multitudes of people thirsty to gain new knowledge on sex filling up the venue.

Just Sex’s third edition centred around men’s health as the month of November themed 'Movember' focuses on teaching men about their health. The function consisted of engaging topics that were really eye-opening on things that many who attended were not aware of.

Dr Vincent Molelekwa who is a specialist in obstetrics, gynaecology, mesotherapy and fertility, and the guest speaker on the night took people through the ins and outs they should know about fertility.

The first thing that got people intrigued was when Dr Molelekwa advised people to have sex three to four times per week or at least 20 times a month as he feels sex does a lot of good to many than people think, as it’s not a matter of penetration only.

“I advise people to have sex three to four times a week because this does not only improve the relationship one is in but for a man, it helps reduce the risk of being diagnosed with prostate cancer by 20%,” Molelekwa said.

The benefits of having sex three to four times per week do not stop there as Molelekwa pointed out more benefits as to why he said that, adding that it is scientifically proven that people who stay too long without engaging in peno vaginal sex put themselves at risk of becoming infertile. “Staying too long without having sex can really put one at risk of becoming sub-fertile or infertile as it can lead to sperm motility and morphology being decreased.

So, I urge people to not abstain for a long time, especially if they want to be parents of their own biological children someday,” Molelekwa said. The audience, more especially men, was told to do away with the mindset of thinking that it is always women’s fault when a couple does not conceive a child as infertility affects all whether male or female. Molelekwa went on to point out the causes that lead to men being infertile: “There are many factors that play a role in a man becoming infertile, and one other example is the sperm number and movement.

A man can have low sperm count or no sperm at all and these are some of the things that people are not aware of. You could be ejaculating but those sperms that you ejaculate may be low,” he said. Still on causes of infertility for men, he said the movement of the sperm is also key as some sperm when deposited during intercourse does not swim at all, and just dies without swimming into the uterus to the egg.

“The other thing that people are not familiar with is that one can have abnormal sperm. One may have sperm that is not normally formed and a low percentage of normally formed sperms, and also sperm fragmentation,” he said.

Sperm fragmentation refers to a point when damage or breaks in the genetic material of the sperm occurs. He advised people who are engaging in unprotected peno vaginal sex to seek medical help after a period of 12 months of trying to have a child of their own as that could only mean that there is a problem with fertility between the two.
