Matebele, as BDF XI are affectionately called by their supporters, fell 1-0 to Mogoditshane Fighters on Saturday, their third loss this season after four matches. They have only managed to get a point in the 0-0 draw against Nico United three weeks back and are yet to score a goal this season.

Fighters on the other hand registered their first win this season.

Many people expected BDF XI to get back on track against Fighters with the latter getting into the match as underdogs. The game started on a low note with the two teams trying to adjust to the scorching heat conditions.

It was an evenly contested encounter with two teams going for each other but it soon changed when BDF XI realised that Fighters' left wing back could not cope with Oratile Taunyane’s pace.

BDF XI nearly broke the deadlock on the 15th minute with a free kick taken by Pelontle Lerole from outside the box and Fighters goalkeeper, Tshomarelo More made a brilliant save, parrying the ball away.

Fighters midfield and defense stood tall as they dealt swiftly with BDF XI’s attacks and the game went to the halftime break goalless. Early in the second half, Fighters nearly took the lead when their attacker, Emmanuel Ditodi took a shot from outside the box after getting a delightful pass from Kakanyo Kethubile. Fighters started to sit back and play low block, looking to catch BDF XI on counter attacks.

They broke the deadlock on the 65th minute through Thuso Keraetswe who received a pass and cut onto the inside to beat his marker and slotted the ball home. The solitary goal ensured that Fighters moved up above BDF XI on the log standings.

After the match, BDF XI coach, Letang Kgengwenyane said his team need to improve on finishing as they are able to create chances for themselves. “We have now gone four games without a goal and this is something that is really worrisome.

We need to change and we cannot be playing like this every time. I believe we can be at a better position for the club,” Kgengwenyane said. While on the other Ofentse Mapeu was rather left elated as his side seems to be gaining momentum gradually. “I just want to thank the players for coming out strong against BDF XI. I am also really glad that the boys carried out the plan as intended.

I believe we can still do more and I hope we carry on with this mentality," Mapeu said.
