Jackalas No1 granny 'hangs self' with headscarf

According to Tshesebe Police acting station commander, Motlhokomedi Ponyane her granddaughter and neighbours discovered her lifeless body.

He said they received the report of the tragic incident at midnight from the deceased's family.

Ponyane indicated that the deceased's granddaughter told the police that after midnight she found her grandmother missing from her bed, something that was very suspicious.

“She then screamed for help from her neighbours after searching the whole compound and calling her without a response. Some of the neighbours came to her rescue and saw the deceased's footprints leaving the compound,” he added.

He elaborated that the deceased woman’s footprints led to a nearby bush where they found her already dead.

The Tshesebe acting station commander added that when the old woman found her headscarf was still tied to a tree near her body.

It is alleged that the old woman used her headscarf to hang herself, but after committing the deed her body was too heavy for the headscarf to continue carrying her weight and disentangled.

He said that investigations indicate that the old woman did not show any signs of depression or stress, something that shocked her family. Ponyane was concerned about elderly people committing suicide in their policing area.

He said that this is the second incident of this type in their policing area.

Mid this year there were reports of a 70-year-old woman who committed suicide at Senyawe village which is part of the Tshesebe policing area.

The Tshesebe police acting boss said that it is shocking that the elderly are taking their lives though they are considered to be sensible and could be the ones helping to address such issues.

He urged people, especially the elderly to seek guidance and comfort from their church leaders or social workers because taking one's own life is not a solution.

He said that bereavement leads to pain and suffering for those left behind, therefore, committing suicide is never a solution.
